By implementing a moratorium on deep-sea mining and addressing concerns related to potential conflicts, nations have taken a leading role in advancing a sustainable ocean economy. While challenges persist, such as Norway's decision to open an area of Arctic seafloor for exploration, the international community's voice and actions speak volumes about their dedication to the protection of our oceans. After years of arduous work and negotiations, the Biodiversity Beyond National Jurisdiction Treaty, known as the High Seas Treaty, was successfully adopted in 2023. This momentous agreement represents a significant milestone in the protection of oceanic biodiversity and the regulation of human activities in international waters. Through the establishment of marine protected areas, environmental impact assessments, and fair access to marine genetic resources, this treaty showcases the power of global cooperation. As we eagerly await ratification by at least 60 states, we can take pride in the progress made and hold hope that this treaty will come into force by 2025. This monumental achievement is destined to be recognized as the "Nobel Prize of the Environment," honoring the dedication and expertise of those involved in the fields of ocean and fisheries science.

This achievement serves as a cause for celebration and a reminder that our oceans are at the forefront of sustainable development, benefiting both our planet and its inhabitants.
