Santa Barbara is famous for its sunny weather, but even a rainy day can offer a fresh perspective on the area’s beauty. Today I had the pleasure at lunch of sitting next to a family visiting the area, with three small kids, and they felt cooped up after the drive and wished they could go outside, but they said too bad it was raining. Never fear! Don't let the rain slow you down. I was happy to share some of my favorite places and memories. Whether you’re a local or just visiting, here are five fantastic activities to enjoy with your family when the skies turn gray:
1. Alice Keck Park Memorial Garden
Rain adds a tranquil charm to this lush downtown retreat. Explore Alice Keck Park pathways lined with over 75 plant species, interact with the sensory garden, and watch for ducks and turtles near the pond. It’s a magical experience perfect for a light drizzle. Peek across the street too, for more playground action.

2. Rainy Beach Adventures at Hendry’s Beach
Especially in the rain, local favorite Hendry’s (Arroyo Burro Beach) offers breathtaking views with its dramatic cliffs and winding coastline. Free parking, and kids (and many dogs allowed off leash on one way but not the other) can enjoy puddle stomping and beachcombing, and families can warm up afterward with a meal at the Boathouse Restaurant. Wonder toward the end of the overflow parking lot for a hidden trail up the cliff to Wilcox Preserve open space.

3. Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History, Sea Center Museum on Stearns Wharf
Inside the Sea Center, stay dry while diving into the wonders of the Santa Barbara Channel. This interactive aquarium features hands-on exhibits where kids can touch sea creatures and learn about marine ecosystems. It’s an engaging indoor escape that sparks curiosity. Amazing blueberry pancakes next door at Char West if you arrive before 11 a.m. Walk to the end of Fisherman's Wharf for unmatched ocean and city views, fish and beverages.

4. Rattlesnake Canyon Trail
For families who love the outdoors, rainy hikes in Rattlesnake Canyon reveal a serene, refreshed landscape. Shaded trails, a bubbling creek to cross, and the chance to spot wildlife make this a one-of-a-kind adventure. Wear sturdy boots and enjoy the crisp, rain-soaked air! Pack water, snacks and wear sunscreen rain or shine.

5. Adams Legacy Foundation Accessible Trail at Elings Park
For families looking for outdoor fun even in the rain, thanks in huge part to the Sage Trail Alliance, the accessible trail at Elings Park is a fantastic option! Recently improved with a hard-surfaced path, this trail welcomes everyone—from joggers to wheelchair users—making it a great spot to enjoy nature, rain or shine. Bonus: the trails are dog-friendly and surrounded by native plant restoration efforts.

I miss the days of stomping in puddles. Simply walking in the rain exploring Fall Leaves in the neighborhood is another favorite memory. Don't be afraid of playing in the rain, go outside! Santa Barbara’s rainy days are opportunities to explore and create new memories in this beautiful coastal region. So when the forecast calls for rain, grab your gear and embrace the adventure!
