Welcome to Santa Barbara

Santa Barbara, CA Community

In the sunny coastal city of Goleta, just a stone's throw from Santa Barbara, there's a place where apples aren't just for keeping doctors away. They're for turning into delicious, gluten-free booze. Welcome to Santa Barbara Cider Company, where cider flows like water and good times are always on tap.

The Cider Revolution

In 2017, Ben Schroeder, a UCSB grad with a knack for brewing, decided to shake things up in adult beverages. Why? Because his 12-year-old daughter has celiac disease, and let's face it, gluten-free beer often tastes like sad, hoppy water. So, Ben thought, "Why not cider?" What started as a hobby quickly turned into a full-blown obsession.

Before long, Ben was the go-to guy for weddings, parties, and events where people wanted something fruity and boozy. It was like he had a superpower, but he could turn apples into happiness instead of flying or invisibility.

From Garage to Greatness

After seven years of perfecting his craft in his garage (talk about dedication!), Ben decided it was time to go big or go home. Along with his sister Twilight Robin (yes, that's her real name, and yes, it's fantastic) and his buddy Niklas Shaefer, Ben opened the doors to Santa Barbara Cider Company on August 17, 2017.

This cider haven is located at 325 Rutherford Street, Suite D, in Goleta, slightly off the beaten path. It's tucked away in an industrial park behind a paint store, like a speakeasy for apple enthusiasts. But don't worry—there's a sign on the street to guide you to cider paradise.

Not Your Grandma's Apple Juice

Now, if you're thinking, "Cider? Isn't that just fancy apple juice?" prepare to have your mind blown. Santa Barbara Cider Company doesn't just stick to apples. Oh no, they get creative.

Imagine sipping on a cider infused with mulberry (they call it "Deepen") or one that tastes like a Hawaiian vacation (aptly named "Great Lei"). For the hop-heads, a "Hoppy Ending" cider will make you question everything you thought you knew about beer.

But here's the kicker - all these wild flavors come from real, simple ingredients. No artificial colors, no fake sweeteners, just pure, unadulterated cider goodness. It's like a farmer's market in a glass, but with alcohol.

A Tasting Room With Character

The tasting room itself is a work of art. Picture this: walls made from shipping containers, recycled fence planks, and other reused materials. It's like your excellent friend's garage, but cleaner and with better drinks.

Open Wednesday through Sunday (because even cider needs a weekend), this place is always buzzing with activity. On any night, you might find live music, food trucks, or even a guitarist serenading you while you sip. And if you're feeling competitive, they've got games too. Nothing says "I'm an adult," like arguing over Jenga while drinking fermented fruit juice.

Something for Everyone

One of the best things about Santa Barbara Cider Company is its ability to convert even the most stubborn beer and wine drinkers. Wine lovers, who swore they'd never touch cider? They're here. Beer drinkers looking for something lighter? They're here, too. It's like the Switzerland of alcohol-neutral territory where everyone can get along.

And for those with gluten sensitivities or celiac disease, this place is a godsend. All the ciders are made with no gluten ingredients on dedicated gluten-free equipment. It's so safe that you could probably bathe in the stuff (but please don't; that would be weird and sticky).

The Future is Fruity

What started as a small operation has quickly grown into a local favorite. The cidery is expanding, investing in new equipment to meet demand. They plan to can and bottle their ciders so you can enjoy a taste of Santa Barbara wherever you go.

But despite its growing success, Santa Barbara Cider Company hasn't forgotten its roots. It's still all about experimenting with flavors and pushing the boundaries of what cider can be. From blueberry lemon concoctions for the Lemon Festival to sour, sweet, and spicy seasonal offerings, there's always something new to try.

Come for the Cider, Stay for the Experience

So, next time you're thirsty and in the Santa Barbara area, why not give cider a chance? Head over to Santa Barbara Cider Company and prepare for a flavor adventure. Who knows? You might find your new favorite drink.

Just remember - it's hidden behind a paint store. But don't worry. The best things in life are worth seeking out. And trust us, this cider is worth the hunt.
